Fun! Bringing joy to what we do

0:00

After easeful flow and two successful sessions initialising the blog and migrating the designs to Figma components by the time I thought about sitting down to further work on the project a negative mental cloud had drifted in.

I had started to think about what could this project become, and all that would be required to get it there. With such thoughts clouding around the desire to sit down and work on the project near evaporated. Yet just days ago I had felt such a strong and intuitive draw to work on this project: an upwelling of creativity that felt motivating, hopeful, and refreshing. What on earth happened!?

After a day or two of being mired in this seriousness I realised the cloud was encompassing the key ingredient of the project: the desire to have fun.

As I thought about fun more - which sometimes feels like it should only be associated with certain certified activities - I realised that when applied generally, “having fun” is really about bringing joy to all that one does. If something is worth choosing to do, why would you choose to do it unjoyfully?

Needless to say after having this realisation the next programming session on this blog was once again filled with flowing enthusiasm.

It’s incredible how simply a change in mental posture can change the same idea or task from being unappealing to totally appealing and the actor from being unmotivated to motivated!

What can you make fun of today that you might otherwise have thought of as a chore?
